Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal disorder occurring in people with diabetes. Due to the diabetes, the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the retina is insufficient. The increasing damage to the vessels caused by the diabetes, as well as the new development of pathological blood vessels leads to a harmful accumulation of fluid in the further course of the disease. This disturbs the function of the retina and impairs vision.

If the diabetic retinopathy is detected in time, in the best case scenario it can be slowed down. However, if it remains untreated, it can lead to blindness. The disease can be prevented by ensuring optimal treatment of the patient’s diabetes.
